What is 3D/4D Ultrasound?
An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create a picture of your baby while it’s still in the womb. Compared to traditional 2D ultrasounds, 3D and 4D ultrasounds offer greater detail and superior image quality.
A 3D ultrasound takes pictures from multiple angles and creates an image that resembles a photograph, so you can clearly see your baby’s face and body. A 4D ultrasound combines these images into a video, so you can watch your baby in real time. With 4D ultrasound, you may be able to see your baby wiggle their toes, suck their thumb, or open and close their eyes. 3D and 4D ultrasounds also make it easier to diagnose any birth issues.
What to Expect
During your ultrasound, you will lie flat on an examining table. A technician will apply a small amount of gel to your skin, which helps the ultrasound to get a clearer picture. Then they will place a device called a “transponder” against your belly and move it around to generate the 3D images. This process is non-invasive and completely painless.
As the transponder collects data, pictures of your baby will appear on the monitor. You will be able to see your baby’s face, hands, umbilical cord and more. The ultrasound will also let you see and hear your baby’s heartbeat. If you request it, your doctor can tell you your baby’s gender – though some parents want to leave this as a surprise.
The entire process will take approximately 15-20 minutes. When your ultrasound is finished, you will be able to take home pictures or videos of your baby as keepsakes.

FAQs
What is the difference between 2D, 3D, and 4D?
2D is a flat 2-dimensional image used to examine a baby’s organs. 3D creates a 3-dimensional image, which is a still image. 4D is livestream 3-dimensional imaging, which shows baby movement.
Is it safe for the baby?
Safety is our number one priority at Rutherford Premier Women's Care. Unlike other procedures that utilize radiation, ultrasounds employ sound waves to generate images, offering a non-invasive and safe way to visualize your baby.
When is the best timeframe for 3D-4D imaging?
26-32 weeks is the best time for 3D/4D imaging, as your baby’s facial features are more developed, and you can capture detailed images.
